Jenkins' excuses

Posted by Delme Parfitt on August 7, 2007 11:02 AM |

For Gareth Jenkins to come out and admit Wales were taken totally by surprise by England is almost unprecedented in my experience.

It is rare indeed for any Test coach to admit he and his team have been outwitted, but it's still not what people want to hear.
The question is surely: WHY were you so taken by surprise?
Surely it is one of the key parts of a coach's job to second guess as close as possible what the opposition are planning and be prepared for it.
I'll say one other thing.
Jenkins has put all his cards on his best players coming back to rescue him with what he has said this week.
"Judge me on the World Cup" and "There's more to come from this team" was the gist of his sentiments.
But having said all that, he now HAS to deliver results because he has run out of excuses.
If his best team fails him, there is nowhere else for him to turn.
As I said in print this week, only his players can save him now.
But I think if they do they will have done it for themselves and their country rather than for their coach.
Keep the comments coming in - everyone is getting a good platform, on this board and in the paper itself.

The man seems more suited to the self delusional world of politics rather than rugby.
Is he a technical coach at all? if so why is it that even with 20 years experience we still have one of the worse line out's in world rugby. What has he been doing in the last 12 months?

Why are our players so poor at ball retention? when everyone was told how much stronger they are.

What game plan are we trying to play? because it seems to consist of defending for 79 miniutes and hoping for an interception.

In short , just what has this caoching team been doing? speaking of which

Why is our pack coach a man who has never coached even at club level?

Why is the backs coach not insisting on a faster off-load game to counter our poor retentive ball skills?

Why is the coach so arrogant to think that, an admittedly 3rd side could have any hope, what does that say and how can players re-act when they have no platform to do so.

And last - but probably no means least - what is this "David Brent" type PR rubbish that the "coach" spouts

Indeed England doing what they have done for the last 20 years must have come as a great shock. I don't know what video analysis Gareth Jenkins and his band of merry men actually carry out but I suspect they may be watching old episodes of Blackadder.
Apparently Gareth has 'a cunning plan'

God help us.

With seven or even perhaps eight of the starting XV against England likely to be included in the World Cup thirty, I find the "third choice" excuse a bit overplayed.

Hi I am an expat, I would like to ask the question Where has the freeflowing rugby style of 2005 gone? What is the difference between now and then?
Could anyone comment on this? As I believe the answer is the Coaching as a whole. This includes Gareth Jenkins and his band of inexperienced assistant coaches who seemed to be appointed because they know Gareth and no- other reason as not one has had any national or international coaching experience between them. How can we possibly compete with the best??

Since when was there any better 'conditioning' than a touch rugby match. Wales' "first pick" players haven't had a game but Wales thirds have devalued the jersey in their three latest losses. In their "successful" first Australian game they stayed ahead with interceptions and had about 30% possession - the Australians were as cold as "Wales Firsts" will be when they get a game. In game 2 they were hammered 2nd half. We saw the NZ players suffer to try and regain form after months of "conditioning" when they returned to Super 14 - at least they had half a season to find their form - whereas Wales will have to find it against Argentina or France. Beware Canada did not lose to NZ by all that much ...

I believe GJ has got rid of Gavin Henson in order to create a spot for Stephen Jones, so that he can save face by including his "captain". What a travesty of justice! an even half-fit GH has more to offer Wales than SJ, whatever his physical condition.

So now we know! Eleven of the so-called "third-choice" starting lineup, which was so roundly thrashed at Twickenham, are in fact in the final World Cup thirty. That seems to blow the lid off that particular excuse.

how dare that nasty english rugby team have the nerve to keep the ball to themselves for all that time and win all those lineouts and bully our very smart [in their new hi tec kit] players what did they think they were doing playing in a rugby international?
