Gatland's winning environment

The selection of the Welsh team to play Italy was unprecedented in its timing and just shows the confidence of the Welsh camp at the moment.

It's nice to see a coach who knows his own mind so well that he is prepared to make public his choices a full 12 days before the game.
I wasn't surprised to see Stephen Jones and Dwayne Peel restored, you could see that coming a mile off. It's a good decision too because the pair are clearly have so much class and experience to offer.
But I was a little taken aback to see Mark Jones back in for Jamie Roberts, who I thought was impressive on his debut against Scotland.
After thinking about it though, it could be another psychological masterstroke by Gatland.
When he dropped Jones he warned he didn't want to see players throw their toys out of the cot and that there would be rewards for those who got their heads down and worked hard to get back in.
Jones did just that - and he has his reward.
If players see that the coach is as good as his word in these situations then it will be all the encouragement they need when they have a setback.
What a healthy environment we would then have.
They say fortune favours the brave, and I think Gatland has been brave in this selection.
I hope he too gets his reward against the Italians. I believe he will.
What say you?

I agree with everything you've said but more importantly, I think the way he has turned Gavin Henson into a team player in such a short time is nothing short of brilliant. Though unspectacular and a little controlled, Henson is playing the inside centre position like a veteran. Hugely impressed by Gatland.

Has the Welsh Rugby Union chief executive Roger Lewis played yet another control card with his thinking over the British & Irish Lions approach to Warren Gatland as being unwelcome. Is this narrow minded decision making going to continue from the heads of the WRU?

C'mon Roger, just because you have found a coach who is making good early headway with the union you don't need to feel threatened by the possibility of losing him. Warren has openly told the rugby world that within his 4 year contract as Welsh coach he will endeavour to build back a strength and continuity within the players of the union to re-establish Wales back into the top of the world rugby rankings.

Lewis says "If they came (British & Irish Lions) knocking for Warren Gatland, it would be our prerogative and right to block them. I talked about it at length with Warren. We agreed that the interests of Welsh rugby are paramount. Warren could have some Lions role but we'd probably prefer it's not coach."

Is this Roger Lewis' way of saying 'He's mine; I found him.'

Don't get in a tangle over this Roger. Warren has openly made a decision to provide the Welsh rugby union growth and strength as a prominent rugby nation and how he plans to navigate them into a strong position within world rugby. Take the man on his word and don't challenge his decisions too strongly or you will end up with yet another Welsh rugby union coach who walks before their time is up. Warren Gatland was probably flattered to be linked with the role of the 2009 tour of South Africa but don't assume he's going to leave you with unfinished work. Too many coaches have left or been dismissed over the last 21 years with unfinished business. Gatland again has openly said it's going to take him at least 2 years to establish the strength and cohesion of Welsh rugby. Let him do this without stepping on his toes making his desicions for him as you did with Graham Henry.

This is just the beginning for Warren. Let him see it through to the end!

Hey KiwiCarl, whats your problem. Warren Gatland does work for the WRU and it is the right of the WRU to make decisions. It is also the responsibility of Roger lewis to act always in the interest of Welsh rugby. Warren Gatland is starting to get into his job, he has a 4 year contract he has a lot more work to do. Breaking off and upsetting the progress of the Welsh National side is not an option. If he did want to take on the Lions side he would have to make decisions where Welsh squad members came second to the players of the other home countries. That could cause resentment and introduce negative vibes into the system. So why take the chance. It certainly did not work for Graham Henry, so why make the same mistake again.
